Steinschneider, Moritz
(1816-1907)
   German bibliographer and orientalist. He was born in Prossnitz, Moravia. He taught in Prague and Berlin, where he also preached, officiated at weddings, worked as a translator, and wrote Hebrew textbooks. He was appointed lecturer at the Veitel-Heine-Ephraimsche Lehranstalt in 1859, and taught there for 48 years. From 1869 he was also assistant librarian at the Berlin State Library. He produced catalogues of the Hebrew books at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and of the Hebrew manuscripts at Leyden, Munich, Hamburg and Berlin. His other publications include studies of the history of Jewish literature and Hebrew typography. From 1858 to 1882 he edited the Hebraische Bibliographic
